Reportedly, their relatives died in the war time. Pham Ngoc Anh, 86 years old, got a gun shot wound since that time. Nearly a year ago, the wound got worse and infected because they could not afford to have prompt treatment. The doctors had to amputate most of his left leg to save his life. The wound which has not been completely healed becomes more painful when the weather changes. It used to be difficult for Anh to walk with two legs, so it is more difficult now with just one leg and his increasingly poor health.
Long, Ngoc Anh’s wife has also suffered many diseases for a long time (heart disease, dimness of vision, arthritis, and asthma).
Reportedly, the couple receives an allowance of VND1 million per month; however, the money is not enough to buy medicine. Wild vegetables picked in the garden are their regular food. Although having many diseases, they cannot go to the hospital frequently for proper treatment because of lack of money. Ngoc Anh wishes to have a wheelchair so that moving around is not too difficult for him.
