The husband and wife have still not told their 11-year-old daughter about their diseases for her sake.
Dat, Thuy and their child live in a small poor house of 25 square meters in Nhon Tho Hamlet, Van Khanh Commune. As said by Dat, he and his wife earned a living by farming shrimp on an area of land reclaimed by their parents. In 2010, Dat started to feel unwell and experience breathing difficulty; his arms and legs swelled. He then had a medical check-up at Khanh Hoa General Hospital and was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease.
The serious illness has made Dat to become weaker and to be unfit to work. Thuy could not work on the shrimp pond alone; therefore, they have had to let it lie fallow. Thuy did many jobs to earn a living for the whole family and pay treatment cost for her husband. They cannot sell the shrimp pond because that is a reclaimed land without certificate of land use right. They spent most of their savings on the treatment.

Thanks to the support from the local authorities, Dat’s family could borrow VND50 million with preferential treatment for poor household to buy cow breeder to improve their life condition. Unfortunately, in July 2016, Thuy was diagnosed as breast cancer which spread to the lymph nodes in the underarm and needed to be treated promptly. Due to many difficulties their family was facing, Thuy only took medicine to reduce pain instead of having surgery. Thuy’s disease has gotten worse, causing an ulcer on her left chest which has been developing quickly.
In order to help Dat and Thuy to be treated, their siblings mortgaged their houses for VND40 million. Reportedly, at the end of last August, a charity in Nha Trang supported their family by taking Thuy to Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. However, as diagnosed by the doctors, Thuy’s disease has progressed to the end-stage, spread to the bones and cannot be treated by surgery but chemotherapy which costs hundreds of millions of dong.
Since Thuy has been sick, their daughter has been sent to live with Dat’s elder sister. Their family is owing the bank VND90 million, excluding interest payments.
