The disastrous landslide caused by heavy downpour in Nui neighborhood, Thanh Phat Hamlet, Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang last November have left tens of families homeless. The family of Phan Nhat Truong (born in 2006), 7th grade pupil at Bui Thi Xuan Junior High School is among the unfortunates.

Losing house in the landslide, Truong’s family had to hire a small house in Phuoc Long Ward. As said by Truong, in the morning of the incident, Truong was at home with his mother, his younger sister (born in 2007), his aunt, and his two female cousins. A sudden landslide in the mountain destroyed his family’s and their neighbors’ houses. One cousin of Truong was killed in the incident; his younger sister, who has been wholly paralyzed since she was little, was swept away and got injured on her head. Truong’s mother who was 37 months pregnant at that time broke her arms and injured her head. Meanwhile, Truong and his aunt were also hurt in the landslide.

Truong and his father looked after his mother and his sister at the hospitals. Truong’s mother gave birth to her son on December 5, but the newborn got blood infection, kidney failure, and high liver enzymes. The baby was carried to Ho Chi Minh City Children’s Hospital 2 for better treatments. He was discharged from the hospital one week later, but was hospitalized for pneumonia at Khanh Hoa General Hospital on December 24.

As shared by Truong’s father, they bought a small house in Thanh Phat Hamlet, Phuoc Dong Commune with their cumulative money saved in many years. He made living by carrying vegetables to the bistros and restaurants. He and his wife earned around VND15 million, which was enough to take care of the whole family. They lost all their money and possessions in the landslide.

The donations from the locality and donors, the family of Truong can hire a small house and pay hospital fees for Truong’s mother and younger sister. However, spending much time in caring for his wife and his children in the hospitals, Truong’s father has still not able to go back to work to afford the expenses of the whole family.

Hopefully, there will be more units and individuals giving supports to the family of Truong, helping them to overcome the difficult circumstances.
