Hoang Nguyen is being treated at Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion Hematology Hospital. Nguyen’s parents have worked at Khanh Hoa General Hospital since 2013. Bong is an emergency department doctor; Ngoc is a nurse in pediatrics. They live in a rented house and have two children, Hoang Nguyen and Kha Nhien (born in 2018).
In mid-April, Hoang Nguyen stumbled and fell and bruised his body. Some days afterwards, Nguyen presented some symptoms such as loss of appetite and pale skin, more bruises which didn’t go away. He was diagnosed with leukemia by the doctors of Khanh Hoa General Hospital and was transferred to Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion Hematology Hospital for treatment.

At Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion Hematology Hospital, Nguyen was diagnosed to have B-cell leukemia. This disease needs to be treated with six cycles of chemotherapy in around two years or more. Nguyen’s parents borrowed VND70 million from their friends to pay Nguyen’s treatment cost. Their relatives also have their own difficulties, so they could only help Nguyen’s family with some small support. The Labor Union and the Social Work Bureau of Khanh Hoa General Hospital called for support from the hospital’s staff and benefactors to help Nguyen’s family.
Reportedly, since April 22, Nguyen has had three times of chemotherapy, weighing only 16kg. Nguyen’s condition has got better after his latest chemotherapy; he has been able to drink milk and hasn’t felt nauseated.
