Recently, Vang’s second son started to have the same symptoms as his mother and older brother, making the family to experience more financial distress.
Before Vang’s wife and eldest son had cancer, the family of five people lived happily in a small house. Cao Vang (born in 1979) used to work as a local police officer in Khanh Thanh Commune. His wife Cao Thi K.Mail (born in 1980) was a cook at a primary school. They have three children. In 2017, Mai suffered frequent nasal congestion, nosebleeds, breathing problems, and swollen neck lymph nodes. She was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. Vang sold most of their properties in order to pay hospital fees for his wife. However, Mai’s disease has increasingly worsened.

Unfortunately, their eldest son Cao Chi Hao (born in 2002), who was grade 12 student at that time (2017), started to lose weight and present the same symptoms as his mother. Hao was confirmed later to have throat cancer by Khanh Hoa General Hospital. Their family’s has fallen into increasingly straitened circumstances.
Mai and Hao have undergone 3 cycles of chemotherapy at Khanh Hoa General Hospital. They have suffered side effects caused by chemotherapy such as hair loss, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. More seriously, Mai has been blind in her both eyes; her left upper eyelid has drooped over the eye.
Another misfortune happened to Vang’s family. His second son namely Cao Chi Hien (born in 2004, grade 10 student at Lac Long Quang High School) on June 30 had a fever, earache, and swollen glands. Hien’s symptoms were similar to the one of his mother and older brother. He is being treated at Khanh Vinh District Medical Center. As of now, Vang and his youngest daughter (born in 2010) have been the two healthy people in their family; however, Vang is afraid that his daughter would have the same disease as her mother and brothers. Although being supported by health insurance for ethnic minority people, their family has borrowed VND40 million to pay for the treatments.
According to Nguyen Van Sy, chairman of Khanh Thanh Commune People’s Committee, the locality visited and called for financial support from organizations and individuals to help Vang’s family. Sy hopes that people everywhere can provide help so that the family can cope with the difficulties.
