Nguyen Cao Ky Nam (born in 2011, grade 5 pupil at Ninh Hiep 1 Primary School, Ninh Hoa Town, Khanh Hoa) is being treated for blood cancer at Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital. Nam is the second son of Nguyen Thi Hoan Kim Oanh (born in 1979).
As said by Oanh, on November 12, Nam had a fever, purple spots and felt a pain in his legs. Oanh took him to Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital for medical check. He was diagnosed with blood cancer, which requires to be treated actively.
Nam’s situation is quite severe, so he needs to be treated with many times of chemotherapy and blood transfusion in the first two months of the treatment. After each time of chemotherapy, Nam often suffers from fatigue, hair loss, loss of appetite, and vomited.
Although Nam has health insurance, the treatment cost for his disease is very high, exceeding his family’s ability to pay. It has cost them more than VND100 million in nearly one month. Nam’s maternal grandfather had to mortgage their small house to borrow VND60 million and borrow money from their relatives and neighbors to pay the treatment expense.
Nam’s parents divorced when he was just over one. His father hasn’t paid maintenance; his mother has had to rely on his maternal grandparents for their living. Their family make a living by making banh trang (girdle-cake), earning around VND200 thousand per day. Vo Thi Kim Hoan, Nam’s grandmother is often sick with vestibular disorders and degenerative spine. His grandfather has been being treated for floor of mouth cancer since 2018 and underwent gastric surgery in 2020.
The high treatment expenses of Nam and his grandfather has made their family to fall into extreme poverty. Currently, they have to pay monthly interest of VND1.8 million of the loan of VND60 million, not to mention the money borrowed from their relatives and neighbors.
In order to help Nam’s family, Ninh Hiep Ward has created conditions to facilitate Nam’s treatment in Ho Chi Minh City. Besides, the ward authorities have called for support from the units and individuals in the locality to help the family overcome the difficulties.
