Nguyen Gia Khanh, born in 2015, is a fatherless child of a mentally ill mother. Her grandmother is also mentally ill. The three of them live in a small old house in Phu Son Hamlet, Ninh Trung Commune, Ninh Hoa Town, Khanh Hoa Province.
Seven years ago, Khanh's mother, Nguyen Thi Be (born in 1985), was sexually abused and gave birth to her. The mother is mentally ill and does not know how to take good care of her child; therefore, Khanh is constantly ill, often has fever and convulsions, and is malnourished. Khanh has been supported by Phu Son Hamlet Women’s Union Branch and his maternal aunt.
As said by Dao Duc Hai, head of Phu Son Commune, Khanh’s grandmother, Do Thi Mam (born in 1940) has mental problems and is the mother of two daughters and one son. However, except for the eldest daughter, Do Thi Hoa (born in 1971), is mentally normal, her second daughter and her only son have mental problems like her. Their family has faced a lot of difficulties. Besides the monthly social allowance of VND1,260,000 for the people with severe disabilities and mental problems and the elderly, they mainly live on the support and necessaries offered by their neighbors, the hamlet Women’s Union Branch and benefactors.
Khanh’s maternal aunt, who has been married, also has a hard life. She has raised her child alone since her husband died. They live in a rented house in Nha Trang City. She earns a living by selling vegetables at Dam Market, collecting about VND70 to 100 thousand per day. She sometimes buy food for her mother, sister and nephew.
The family mainly relies on the help of Tran Thi Bach Tuyet, head of Phu Son Hamlet Women's Union Branch. Tuyet often helps Khanh’s mother how to do housework and takes care of Khanh when she is ill.
Living in poor conditions with mentally ill grandmother and mother has partly affected Khanh’s development. Hopefully, benefactors and other people will offer support to Khanh’s family so that she will have better conditions for living and studying.
