Nguyen Dang Nhu Quynh (born in 2008) is in grade 9 at Le Hong Phong Junior High School, Ninh Hoa Town. She has always achieved good results at school. However, since the end of April 2021, Quynh has suffered a rare disease and has been regularly hospitalized, making her have difficulties in studying and daily activities.

Quynh is the second child of Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong (born in 1981). Their family lives in a small house in Vinh Thanh Hamlet, Ninh Trung Commune. Quynh has often got sick since childhood, but her family didn’t think that it was related to a serious health problem. At the end of April 2021, Quynh had a headache; her lips were swollen; rashes appeared on her body; so she was taken to Ninh Hoa General Hospital. Quynh's blood pressure was too high; she also had kidney failure. Therefore, the hospital recommended transferring her to Children's Hospital 1, Ho Chi Minh City. At Children's Hospital 1, Quynh was diagnosed with hypertension due to renal artery stenosis, a birth defect with only one right kidney which is larger than normal and a double uterus.  This is a rare disease that requires long-term treatments and check-ups to avoid serious health complications in the future.

Quynh was hospitalized for more than two weeks at Children’s Hospital 1. Her family had to borrow VND30 million to pay her treatment cost and hospital fee. After that, her treatment was postponed due to the outbreak of Covid-19. In mid-November 2021, Quynh had a severe stomachache. Her family took her to Khanh Hoa General Hospital where she was diagnosed to have uterine fluid retention due to double uteruses. She had to undergo surgery. She is recovering now.

Quynh’s father works as an employed farmer; her mother sells vegetables at market. Their earnings are unstable. Quynh’s elder sister, a third-year student at Nha Trang University, works part time after classes to ease her parents’ financial burden.

As said by Quynh’s form teacher, despite often having to skip classes for treatment, Quynh has still studied hard and joined activities of the school and class. The school and class have always created favorable conditions for Quynh to continue studying. Recently, Quynh secured third prize at a commune-level contest on literature. She hopes to become a literature teacher.

Hopefully, people everywhere will offer support to help Quynh be able to afford her treatment and continue studying.
