Nguyen Tien Dat Quoc Huy (born in 2009), eighth-grade pupil at Vo Thi Sau Junior High School, Phuoc Long Ward Long, Nha Trang City has been missing school and is being hospitalized for long-term treatment of arteriovenous malformation, endocarditis, splenic infarction and septicemia. His family is in a desperate need of help to be able to afford Huy’s treatment cost.
As said by Le Thi Sang, Huy’s mother, after coming home from school on November 16, 2022, Huy felt tired and had a fever; at night, he was delirious and was unable to control himself. He was taken to Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital where the doctors diagnosed him with arteriovenous malformation, endocarditis, splenic infarction and septicemia and indicated a surgery to save his life. On November 24, the family was suggested to transfer Huy to Children's Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City because his condition changed quite badly. At Children's Hospital 2, Huy was found to have infection caused by staphylococcus aureus, acute and subacute infective endocarditis, intracranial hemorrhage, and pleural effusion. After nearly 2 months of intensive treatment at Children's Hospital 2, he is currently being hospitalized at Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital to prepare for a cranioplasty.
In order to pay for the treatment fees, Huy’s parents borrowed VND50 million from their relatives and friends and have not been able to pay any money. They live on an unstable income. Huy’s father is often sick and earns money from carrying ice and fruit for shops. His mother does housework and earns a pittance as a hired worker. In order to help his parents, before he got sick, after school, Huy often helped his mother with the cooking and earned some money as a ball boy at some tennis courts while trying to fulfill his studies.
The school management board of Vo Thi Sau Junior High School raised VND212 million through a school donation, which helped the family afford the treatment cost of Huy’s nearly-2-month hospitalization at Children's Hospital 2. The school also agreed to allow Huy to take a gap year to be treated. Huy finished the last school year with good results. His homeroom teacher and classmates hope that he will get well soon and continue his study.
