5-year-old child with leukemia needs help

H.N

Nguyen Bao Trang (born in 2019, Dat Lanh Hamlet, Nha Trang City) used to be a lively girl and showed her interest in music and drawing. At present, she cannot continue attending kindergarten because of leukemia.

During her summer holiday in July 2024, Trang often had fever, skin rashes; lost appetite; and suffered abdominal bloating. Her parents, Nguyen Tra Ly (born in 1984) and Nguyen Thi Bao Giao (born in 1991) took her to Khanh Hoa General Hospital and learned that their youngest daughter had leukemia. She was suggested being transferred to Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion Hematology Hospital for treatment.

After two months of chemotherapy, Trang's condition has been improved with cancer cells in her blood decreasing to below 5%. According to the doctors, her illness requires long-term monitoring and regular check-ups, but the treatment costs are very expensive.

Since Trang’s condition worsened, her mother had to quit her job after two months of probation as an accountant at a corporate consulting company to stay home and care for her. The family's main income now depends on Ly. The family’s financial situation, which was already difficult, has become even worse, as they have had to borrow over VND100 million from their relatives and friends to cover Trang’s medical expenses. Ly and Giao are trying to sell their most valuable asset—their small one-story house—to afford their child’s treatment costs, but they have failed to find a buyer because the house lacks a land-use certificate. The debt remains, leaving the couple extremely worried and unsure of how to come up with the money for their child’s next rounds of treatment.

According to Nguyen Truong Nhat Nguyen, vice-chairman of Vinh Thai Commune People's Committee, the local authorities visited, offered encouragement, provided the family of Trang with VND3 million taken from the commune’s Child Protection Fund; coordinated with the Trade Union of Nha Trang City People's Council and People's Committee to visit and give gifts to the family. In addition, the local authorities have guided the family in preparing paperwork to assess Trang's level of disability, so she could receive social assistance. Recently, the commune has supported and assisted the family in filing for emergency assistance from the Provincial People's Committee. It is reported that the Provincial People's Committee has agreed to provide the family with a support of VND15 million.
