Nguyen Thi Dieu Hien’s husband, Vo Khac Hiep (born in 1985), is in the final stage of kidney failure, has been suffering from pneumonia, heart failure and high blood pressure since 2023. Their eldest daughter Vo Hoang Thao Uyen (born in 2008) is being treated for lymphoma. Uyen has undergone 5 chemotherapy sessions and has the 6th session on January 15, 2025. However, her family cannot afford the payment.

As said by Dieu Hien, in July 2024, Uyen often had sore throat and fever; her condition wasn’t better although she took medicine bought from pharmacies. Uyen was brought to Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital for medical check and was diagnosed with lymphoma and was recommended being transferred to higher level hospitals for treatment. The burden weighs on the Dieu Hien as her husband and daughter both have suffered from fatal diseases.

Before getting sick, Hiep had a stable job as a car mechanic, earning around VND12 million/month. Hien works as a seasonal construction worker, earning VND350,000/day. Since getting sick, Hiep has been unable to continue working. When Hiep has difficulty breathing, Hien had to stay at home to be on hand to take her husband to the hospital.
Uyen is being treated for lymphoma according to the doctor's regimen, being hospitalized at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital every 21 days. Uyen’s family requested a temporary leave of absence and preserving her academic results, which was approved by her school. Uyen had performed well at school and got a scholarship for poor student overcoming difficulties to study well in her tenth grade. Uyen’s math and English teachers offered free extra classes. She hopes that she can be cured to be able to help her mother take care of her father and younger brother as well as continue her studying.

Hien has borrowed more than VND100 million to cover the cost of her husband and daughter's treatment; she hasn't paid off the debt yet. Their relatives could only offer some support because they are also in not good financial condition. “After 5 sessions of treatment, Uyen’s doctors have informed that her health is progressing well and scheduled her 6th (final) follow-up examination in January 2025. However, we cannot afford the money,” said Hien.

As reported by Phan Thi Thuy Duong, chairman of Dien Lam Commune People's Committee, Hien’s family is a poor household in the commune. Local authorities and some organizations have donated to help the family and also helped Hiep be eligible for benefits for people with severe disabilities of VND750,000/month and 100% health insurance. Uyen and her younger brother have been given school fee exemptions. However, the family is still facing a lot of difficulties due to the financial burden of large medical cost. Through Khanh Hoa Newspaper, the locality hopes that readers everywhere will offer support to help Hien’s family overcome their difficulties.
