The Don Ca Tai Tu Club (Khanh Hoa Provincial Cultural Center) has just celebrated the 10th anniversary of establishment, marking a difficult 10-year period to maintain and develop the passion for this traditional musical art form.

Maintaining and developing

According to Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, head of Don Ca Tai Tu Club (at 154 2-4 Street, Nha Trang City), in the start-up phase, the club has only 15 members. After that, the club faced the lack of personnel after the leave of two  managing  members. The club also did not have an orchestra; therefore, it was very difficult to practice and perform on stage. However, with the passion for Don Ca Tai Tu, the club’s members still maintained weekly activities and helped each other to overcome the difficulties.

The orchestra is the key factor in a Don Ca Tai Tu performance. Therefore, in order to maintain the club, the managing board tried to find skilled musicians to form the orchestra. Some members of the Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre joined the club, becoming the key members and composers of the club.

The Don Ca Tai Tu Club has grown in both quantity and quality. The club now has more than 50 members. Beside members from Nha Trang City, there are many members from other localities such as Van Ninh, Cam Ranh and Ninh Hoa.

Recently, the club has performed regularly in many art programs of the Provincial Cultural Center, leaving much impression on the audiences. In addition, the club also associated with Khanh Hoa Radio – Television Station to record and film many art programs.

New factors

The club has attracted many young talented singers to join the club. In 2013, those singers took part in some traditional music competitions and gained quite good results. For example, Dao Thi Kim Loan and Pham Minh Chanh were selected to the semi-final round of Vong Co Golden Bell in the Central region, and Ngo Kim Thuy was one of the final-round contestants in Bong Lua Vang competition held by Ho Chi Minh City Television Station.

Dao Thi Kim Loan shared, “Since I joined Don Ca Tai Tu Club, I have received much support from the senior members; therefore, I can enhance my singing ability and perform confidently on stages. Although I did not win any award in the Vong Co Golden Bell competition, this was a good opportunity for me to pursue my passion for Vong Co."

“This is a strong club of the Provincial Cultural Center. Beside taking part in many art programs of the center, Don Ca Tai Tu Club also has a quite sustainable development trend with many professional musicians, promising young vocalists and good management,” said Cao Minh Tho, manager of public cultural – art department under the Provincial Cultural Center.

In the future, the club intends to open some branches in some localities in Khanh Hoa Province. The club will also train its members in musical instruments, composing and professional performance to join the important art programs in the province.
