Resounding drum beats

Groups of tourists come up Ponagar Temple (located on Cu Lao Hill, Nha Trang City) to contemplate the beautiful and quaint architectural works, watch Cham artisans weaving fabric and making pottery and enjoy the typical music shows with the resounding drum beat of Ginang – a unique musical instrument of Cham people.

A set of Ginang, including two drums, together with Saranai clarinet and Baranung drum are played at the traditional festivals of Cham people and play an important role in the spiritual life of the locals.

According to Van Ngoc Chi, head of Cham musical group, a Ginang virtuoso, both domestic and international visitors are interested in the resounding drum beats of Ginang. The atmosphere in Ponagar Temple seems to become more animated with the sound of this typical music instrument of Cham people.

Attractive tourism product

Khanh Hoa Provincial Monument Management Center invited the Cham music group from Ninh Phuoc District, Ninh Thuan Province to perform at Ponagar Temple. The group includes five female dancers and three male instrumentalists.

The harmonious combination of the musical instruments and Cham dances shows clearly the typical cultural feature of the Ponagar relic site.

“I like watching the performances of the Cham music group, especially, the lively sound of the pair of Ginang drums. Coming to Ponagar Temple, I can learn about the history, contemplate the architectural works and watch the unique music items of Cham people,” said Thu Trang, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City.

Reportedly, beside Ponagar Temple, the Cham music group is invited to perform at some tourism sites in the province, such as Con Se Tre and Six Sense Ninh Van Bay.

The Ponagar Temple connects closely with the Cham culture. Therefore, the music shows performed by the indigenous people partly promote the cultural features of the nation, have become a typical tourist product of Khanh Hoa Province and created a good impression on tourists.
