April 21 has just been selected as the Vietnam Book Day, exciting the book lovers in Vietnam as well as in Nha Trang City.

The organizing of the Vietnam Book Day aims to promote and develop the reading movement; honor the values and importance of books in human’s life; honor the readers and the people who working in the book industry. In addition, this activity also partly contributes to raise the responsibility of the authorities at many levels in building and developing the reading culture.

Reportedly, Le Xuan Than - Deputy Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee - had an idea to organize a book festival on the occasion of the Sea Festival 2011. However, that activity wasn't held because of some difficulties.

“Nha Trang - Khanh Hoa is a cultural and tourism center in the coastal provinces  in the Southern Central and Highland; therefore, it is necessary to hold a large-scale book day, creating a good impression on the locals and tourists here,” said poet Giang Nam.

In recent years, the business of cultural products in general and books in particular in Nha Trang City has a better development than before with the opening of Phuong Nam Bookstore and Fahasa Bookstore. However, there have been too few activities to promote the reading culture (for example, the exchanges between authors and readers). Therefore, the Vietnam Book Day is a good occasion to raise the interest of people in books.

According writer Hoang Nhat Tuyen, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Association of Literature and Arts, there are some activities which should be organized on the Vietnam Book Day, such as book exhibitions, book festivals, exchanges and talks on books and collections of books for charity. The books can be taken from not only the bookstores and libraries but also individuals.

Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa is a famous tourism center, attracting more and more tourists from over the world. In order to keep tourists visiting this interesting destination, the beach city needs to enrich its cultural features, including the reading culture. Poet Giang Nam shared “…reading books partly contributes to cultivate virtues and lead people to the truth, honesty and beauty.”
