On the opening day of the Nha Trang Water Puppet Theatre, most of audiences showed eagerness to watch the unique arts form originating from the North of Vietnam. The artists performed lively activities in daily life of Vietnamese farmers, such as cultivating, ploughing, bailing out water, frog catching, fishing, etc. The traditional puppet performances such as dragon dance and four-supernatural-creature dance helped the audiences to know more about the spiritual life of ancient Vietnamese.

Beside traditional items, the artists of Nha Trang Water Puppet Theatre also extracted the legend of King Le Loi returning sword to the Golden Turtle God. Although the legend is very familiar to most of people, the audiences still felt attractive thanks to the unique of water puppet.
“I used to hear about Vietnam’s water puppet but this is my first time watching this unique arts form. The water puppet artists are so talented. They created a lively world with numerous different characters only with wooden puppets. The performances are very lively and colorful,” shared Elena (tourist from Russia) after watching the show from start to finish.

According to Pham Hoang Vu, Director of Nha Trang Water Puppet Theatre, Nha Trang – Khanh Hoa is a big tourism center in Vietnam, drawing a large number of tourists from over the world. However, there have been few services of arts, culture and entertainment to serve the tourists. Therefore, water puppet was selected to enrich the tourism services in Nha Trang City.

The veteran artists of Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre came to Khanh Hoa to recruit and actresses and actors as well as arrange the programs. According to Excellent Artist Nguyen Phuong Nhi, head of 2nd delegation of actor and actress of Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, it required most effort in training because this art form was new to all of Khanh Hoa’s artists. However, every artist worked hard to overcome the difficulties.
Besides, in order to promote Vietnamese culture, Nha Trang Water Puppet Theatre also exhibits ceramic paintings on the countryside in Vietnam, traditional musical instruments of Vietnam and ethnic minorities in the Highlands, etc. along the entrance of the theatre.
It can be said that the opening of the Water Puppet Theatre is really a highlight in the spiritual life in Nha Trang City.
