After eight months, the contest received 52,177 entries from 358 units, increasing by 18 per cent compared to 2013. According to the organization board, the paintings’ quality of the 2014 contest was quite good; the quality gap of paintings drawn by children living in different areas has been significantly narrowed. Pupils in the cities had a quite good skill in layout and brushstroke while the strength of pupils in the mountainous areas was portraying and coloring.

The organization board selected 135 most excellent pictures to exhibit at the provincial Children’s House (62 Thai Nguyen Street, Nha Trang City). The pictures were diverse in materials (pastel, acrylic, wax crayon, paste paper) and in themes (landscape, daily activities, animal, study). Through the pictures, pupils showed their love for the soldiers on Truong Sa Island and conveyed messages on environmental protection and traffic safety.

Exhibition attracts both children and adults.

“The pupils’ artistic sense is good. Paintings of children at kindergarten are full of spontaneousness and cuteness while pictures of elementary school pupils have pureness, bright color and logical layout,” said painter Bui Van Quang, the jury’s member of Khanh Hoa fine arts awards for children 2014.

The exhibition was like a colorful flower garden with numerous themes on islands, seas, fields, mountain villages, mountains, etc. The exhibition drew the attention of many parents and pupils who love paintings.

“I feel interested in painting; therefore, I asked my mother to take me to the exhibition. There are many beautiful pictures. Through the exhibition, I think that I need to practice and learn more about painting,” shared Nguyen Duy Thinh, pupil of Loc Tho Elementary School, Nha Trang.

With six times of organization, Khanh Hoa fine arts awards for children has created a useful playground for children loving fine arts in Khanh Hoa Province. The contest has become more and more attractive, being shown through the year-by-year increase number of participants and entries. The exhibits have also partly reflected the pictures ‘quality of this contest.

However, the contest also saw the interference of the adults in children’s paintings; many pictures had a lot of elements of propaganda and lacked in true feeling.

Khanh Hoa Fine Arts Award for Children is just a playground. Therefore, the children should be allowed to show their spontaneousness; the adults should play a role in encouraging and suggesting the ideas for the children instead of interfering too much in their creation.
