Cabaret – café: keep trying to attract customers

While many cabaret-cafes in Nha Trang City have declined, some ones have still tried to maintain their activities. These cabaret-cafes have partly contributed to enrich the cultural life and entertainment for the locals in the beach city.

While many cabaret-cafes in Nha Trang City have declined, some ones have still tried to maintain their activities. These cabaret-cafes have partly contributed to enrich the cultural life and entertainment for the locals in the beach city.

Phu Si Cabaret-café is a popular cabaret-café among ones in Nha Trang City. Being established nearly 30 years ago, Phu Si Cabaret-café has become a favorite destination for people who love prewar music. In the past, the city’s citizens often come to this cabaret-café to enjoy the singing of familiar singers like Kim Khanh and Thai Hoa. However, after the leaving of main singer Kim Khanh and some members of the band, Phu Si Cabaret-café is no longer the most favorite destination of music lovers in Nha Trang City.

When Phu Si Cabaret-café has declined, some cabaret-cafes like Champa Island, Hoa Giay no longer hold regular musical shows as before. Under increasingly difficult circumstance, some other cabaret-cafes such as Hon Kien and Le Bao have still tried to maintain their activities. For many years, Hon Kien Cabaret-café has still remained its old style which does not focus on stage performing but uses music as an element to inspire the feeling of customers when listening to music. The cabaret-café often has shows of guitar solos, guitar-violin ensembles of songs of Trinh Cong Son and Ngo Thuy Mien. At present, beside holding musical show every night, Hon Kien Cabaret-café also organizes monthly themed musical nights.

According to Le Bao, owner of Le Bao Cabaret-café located on Tran Van On Street, the cabaret-cafes in Nha Trang City have still faced many difficulties. Not many people come to the cabaret-cafes. Le Bao Cabaret-café has still kept holding musical show every week. On the occasions, this cabaret-café often holds themed musical nights. The flexible and impromptu organization has helped Le Bao Cabaret-café to remain its attractiveness to regular customers.

Recently, there are some new cabaret-cafes in Nha Trang City such as Me Trang and Guitar Xanh (35 Pham Van Dong Street). Music at Me Trang Cabaret-café is foreign and modern one, played by Tectonic Band with two main singers Ai Sang and Pham Quoc Trung (wining first prize at Honda Be U singing and dancing contest). Most of customers coming to this cabaret-café are young people. “I like to watch Tectonic Band because they play modern music which is suitable for young people,” said Nguyen Thu Thuy, student of Nha Trang University.

Guitar Xanh is like a club-house for people who love guitar sound. Coming here, beside enjoying guitar solos, guitar- saxophone ensembles, customers can also ask for their own favorite pieces of music. However, this cabaret-café does not pay attention on designing performing stage compared to other cabaret-cafes.

The cabaret-cafes in Nha Trang City have never flourished because there have had not much need for enjoying music among the locals. Many cabaret-cafes have had to close because of low turnover. Therefore, the fact that some cabaret-cafes in the city have still tried to maintain their activity is a remarkable effort, which has partly enriched the cultural life in the beach city.
