The Khanh Hoa Press Award 2015 received a large number of entries (145 entries of 79 authors and groups of authors), increasing by 6% compared to 2014. Especially, this was the first time the police industry has sent entries to the award. Those things showed the great attraction of the provincial press award which has been increasingly improved in both quality and quantity.

 Many works on maritime sovereignty

As usual, there was an overwhelming numbers of printed works (100 ones) compared to the works of the other types of journalism (television: 25 works, radio: 2 works, photo journalism: 3 works). The entries sent by local presses were twice as many as the Central and Ho Chi Minh City press agencies based in Nha Trang. The works, bearing individual hallmark of the journalists, varied in subjects and reflected different aspects of life.

There were nearly 30 works written about China’s illegal placement of oil rig within Vietnam’s continental shelf and exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Vietnamese efforts to protect the homeland's sea and islands, the Spratly and Paracel Islands. Some outstanding works belonged to groups of authors of Khanh Hoa Radio - Television Station, journalists Dinh Lam and Thanh Long of Khanh Hoa Newspaper, author Nguyen Van Ly of permanent office of Vietnam News Agency in Khanh Hoa, and so on.

In order to write these articles, the journalists as well as editors made a lot of efforts to keep abreast of the situation, keep the public updated and give the audiences and readers a comprehensive view of events. Especially, group of journalists Dinh Lam and Bich La did not mind hard work to go to Dang Nang City at night in order to meet the fishery control authorities of ship KN22 which had just returned from the Paracel Islands and anchored in Da Nang for repair. The journalists recorded the stories told by the fishery control authorities about the dangerous circumstances which KN22 had to face during 36 days in the Paracel Islands.

The efforts of the authors showed not only their passion for journalism but also their love and responsibility to the nation.

Diversified subjects

Apart from the subject of the East Sea and the Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos, the 2015 Khanh Hoa Press Award also saw many entries written about different outstanding subjects, such as typical models in learning and following the moral example of President Ho Chi Minh, positive changes in rural areas, fate and fortitude of the unfortunates, long-term investigative reports which reflected big problems in daily life. The reports helped in making these problems to be known, be checked and solved by the authorities.

Beside investigative reports, many authors brought interesting stories to the readers, such as the story of a foreign expert who spent many time in forest in many years researching mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever and story of people in Ly Son planting garlic.

The broadcast journalism with its strong point in images also introduced many outstanding problems in different fields to the audience, including tour packages which have been sold without license and unresolved problems relating to delayed projects. Especially, although joining the press award for the first time, Khanh Hoa provincial police industry left a good impression with their report about foreign criminals.

Other works of the broadcast journalism lively reflected issues attracting the attention of the public opinion (preserving brand name of Khanh Son durian, protecting forest, preventing drought, etc.). The works were shown with vivid images, tight layout, incisive comments.

Finally, the organization board gave two first prizes to the works of Khanh Hoa Radio – Television Station’s group of authors and Khanh Hoa Newspaper’s groups of journalists (Dinh Lam – Thanh Long). In addition, four second prizes, six third ones and ten consolation ones were offered to other excellent works. The journalism branch of Khanh Hoa Radio – Television Station and Khanh Hoa Newspaper were awarded collective prize.

“The 2015 press award acknowledged the positive contribution of the journalists in the province and journalists of the Central press agencies based in Khanh Hoa Province. The increase of entries showed that the journalists have been very interested in Khanh Hoa Press Award. However, this year’s award received just a few entries of photo journalism and radio journalism; their quality was not as high as expected. There were not many works about new factors and typical examples. Hopefully, the journalists will make a better investment in these types of journalism in order to introduce high quality works to the public,” said Truong Tan Minh, chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Press Association, director of Khanh Hoa Radio - Television Station, the jury’s head of the press award.
