According to Pham Van Hop, deputy section head of Propaganda & Training Department of Khanh Son District Party Committee, former head of Khanh Son District Cultural & Information Bureau, project’s author, the Raglai has a particular cultural tradition of inhabitants living in the mountainous area of the South Central Coastal region. Especially, there are plentiful of diversified and unique Raglai epics. However, due to the process of integration and development together with the strong impact of the market economy and cultural exchange, most of Raglai young people have showed too little interest in the epics that the epics have faded into oblivion.

In Khanh Vinh District, there are few people who know and memorize Raglai epic. In addition, the Raglai ethnic group in Khanh Son District has had to face many difficulties in daily life; therefore, they have not paid much attention to reserving the epics.


Aiming to find solutions to restore and reserve Raglai epic, Pham Van Hop made fieldwork; collected and reserved Raglai epics; opened classes to teach Raglai pupils about Raglai epics. Reportedly, at present, there are 55 people in Khanh Son District knowing to perform Raglai epics and most of them are the senior residents. Those people are keeping 13 extracts from Raglai epics and 42 Raglai epic songs. Hop also transcribed and translated those epics into Kinh language and Raglai language.


Basing on his fieldwork, Pham Van Hop proposed some solutions to restore and reserve Raglai epic, such as holding Raglai epic teaching classes, Raglai epic clubs; organizing Raglai epic festivals; making regulations to encourage people who transmitting national culture and combining the promotion of Raglai epic with development of local tourism.


The council of science and specialized technology gave a good evaluation to Hop’s project. According to them, the project’s results will become significant grounds for the local authorities to make suitable policies and regulations to restore and reserve Raglai epic in Khanh Vinh District. In the future, the project should be enriched with some more researches as well as particular and practical solutions in order to improve the efficiency of restoring and reserving Raglai epic.
