Don ca tai tu (traditional improvisational chamber music) Club (under Khanh Hoa Provincial Cultural Center) was established in 2003 and has been through many ups and downs. Nowadays, the club has being faced many difficulties; however, the people who love don ca tai tu have still kept determination to maintain their passion.

Reportedly, Don ca tai tu Club was officially formed in 2003 with 15 members. Since then, the members often meet every week to practice together and share the passion for the Southern amateur music.

The club now includes more than 30 members (seven people are instrument players, the others are singers). According to Nguyen Thi Kim Chi, Head of the club, the members work in different fields but they share the same passion. Therefore, although the members are busy with their works and live in different places, they always gather to perform when needed.

Don ca tai tu is easy to go into the hearts of the listeners. The harmony of guitar, dan nguyet (Vietnamese two-chord guitar), dan bau (monochord) and dan nhi (Vietnamese two-chord fiddle) create melodious sounds. At many musical shows, the performances of don ca tai tu often attract the attention of the audience. In order to meet the demand of the audience, beside the well-known sings, the club’s members practice the ones about the love for nation and Uncle Ho.

Nguyen Thai, Deputy Head of the club, said that the club’s members do not play impromptu music but always practice carefully for the performances.

In 12 years, Don ca tai tu Club has had many quite significant contributions to the cultural and musical movement in the locality as well as connected people having same passion for music. The club joined hundreds of shows held by the provincial Cultural Center; took part in programs organized at the beach park (opposite to Tue Tinh Street) and in the time of Sea Festivals and Lunar New Year. Besides, the club has also had exchanges in Cam Ranh, Ninh Hoa, Van Ninh, and Tuy Hoa (Phu Yen). Some members of the club used to be selected to join the Southern Central regional round of Chuong Vang Vong Co (Vong Co Golden Bell).

However, the club has faced some difficulties such as performing places and funds. The performing schedule of the clubs has primarily depended on the schedule of the provincial Cultural Center. In addition, it has been difficult to increase the number of members.

“Don ca tai tu Club has contributed much on the cultural and musical activities of the center; taken part in the programs to serve the locals and tourists. We have also offered conditions for the club to maintain their activities. However, the State’s supports are limited; therefore, the leaders of the club have to exert themselves to keep the club operating,” said Do Thi Thanh Minh, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Cultural Center.
