The 13th Public Art Festival of Khanh Hoa Province (July 19-22) left a deep impression on the music lovers in the land of aloe wood. The singing items about the seas, islands and soldiers and performances which bore local cultural features contributed to strengthen the love for nation of Vietnamese people.

With nearly 60 items performed by 13 units, this year’s festival created an ebullient cultural activity, attracting quite plenty of audience. Although the number of participants of the 2016 festival was fewer than last year, the quality of performances showed a good investment and preparation of the participating units. According to Nguyen Phuong Dong, Director of Khanh Hoa, Provincial Cultural Center, Head of the jury, it is difficult and requires many investment to perform singing items and dancing ones. However, many units successfully created performances which have artistic depth.
At the festival, the art group of Khanh Vinh and Khanh Son brought to the audience well arranged items which introduced typical cultural features of the mountainous areas. Especially, the two units blended the traditional elements with modern ones, evoking emotion in the audience. Some groups like Dien Khanh and Ninh Hoa kept showing the strength in performing folk songs and self-composed items.
Meanwhile, the art group of Nha Trang City, Naval Region 4, Cam Ranh City and provincial Border Guard partly enhanced the love for the national seas and islands with youthful and lively performances, portraying the image of the soldiers and fishermen.
The 2016 festival also saw the efforts of the participants in writing new lyrics and arranged performances of bai choi. This helped to uphold the role of bai choi artists. “Through the festival, we recognize that there are still many people who know bai choi. In the future, we will plan to restore and hold activities in order to preserve and uphold this type of folk art,” said Dong. The festival also created opportunity for some choreographers and singers of the cultural movement at grass-roots level to show their ability.
