Appearing in Nha Trang since late 2016, 3D (three-dimensional) fish paintings have become favorite souvenirs in the beach city.
Nowadays, the three-dimensional fish paintings are being sold at many souvenir shops in Nha Trang; however, Reinvented has been the only group drawing 3D paintings in the beach city. Reinvented was established by people who love painting. The fishes are painted layer by layer meticulously. According to Le Nguyen Thai Vu, leader of Reinvented, it requires much time and high concentration to draw a three-dimensional fish painting. Under normal weather condition, it often takes around seven to eight hours for a layer of resin to dry and around three to four days to complete a painting. The complicated painting even needs seven to ten days to be finished. Therefore, drawing three-dimensional fish can help to improve the painter’s patience. Due to the time and meticulousness required, the price for these paintings is often quite expensive.
The vessels and some items like lotus models, dried leaves and pebbles also play an important role in perfecting the paintings. Beside the normal vessels, the household items and some other appropriate containers are also used. Basing on the shape of the vessels, the painter will think of the ideas for drawing.
It is the oriental concept that the carp is the symbol of success. Therefore, many people believe that displaying a painting of carp in house not only beautifies the living space but also helps to bring wealth into the house. Many young people buy three-dimensional painting of fish to display on their desk or window sill. “I like three-dimensional fish paintings for their lifelike images. I often contemplate the painting to relieve stress,” shared Nguyen Thai Huy (Vinh Diem Trung Urban Area).
At present, Reinvented has made tens of three-dimensional fish paintings worth from VND400 thousand to VND1 million. In addition to fish, the members of Reinvented have also created paintings of dragon, turtle, crab, shrimp, and so on. Although they have not opened a shop, Reinvented have sold 3D paintings to souvenir shops and overseas customers. Reportedly, Reinvented planed to organize a stall selling 3D paintings during the Sea Festival 2017. They also intend to draw portrait paintings with coffee.
Reportedly, Japanese artist Riusuke Fukahori spent 12 years to study and create the technique of three-dimensional goldfish painting. It was introduced into Vietnam some years ago by Vietnamese artist Tuan Anh (Ho Chi Minh City). Tuan Anh is also the painter of the most expensive three-dimensional fish painting in Vietnam until now, which is worth $10 thousand.
