Cam Ranh City (Khanh Hoa Province) is having seven province-level monuments and one nation-level monument out of 75 monuments and sights, in which Hoa Diem archeological site has been the most outstanding monument. This monument has been the only national level archeological site in Khanh Hoa since it was recognized in 2014.

The Hoa Diem archeological site (Hoa Son Hamlet, Cam Thinh Dong Commune, Cam Ranh City) stands at around 5km apart to the south of the center of Cam Ranh. The site was discovered in February 1998 by the research team of Vietnam Institute of Archaeology. Afterwards, in the years of 1999, 2002, 2007, 2010, and 2011, the provincial Museum of Khanh Hoa in association with the National Museum, Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, Southern Institute of Social Sciences, Institute of Human Studies of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Waseda University of Japan often carried out investigation, excavation, and research at this site.

As stated by the archaeologists, Hoa Diem archeological vestige dates from around 5th or 4th century BC to 1st or 2nd century AD. The life and burial practices of people in the prehistory and protohistory in Khanh Hoa were partly discovered through the remains excavated at this archaeology site, including mollusk shells, burial jars, personal possessions buried with the dead, glass beads and stone beads strings, bronze bangle, pieces of pottery, animal bones, shells, and working implements, etc.

Additionally, the Hoa Diem archeological site also has a historical connection with other archaeological sites in Khanh Hoa, south central, south, and highlands of Vietnam, and in other Southeast Asian countries.

In recent years, Cam Ranh has worked jointly with Khanh Hoa Provincial Heritage Conservation Center to provide researchers and archaeologists convenient conditions for excavation and research. However, it requires more and better investments to promote effectively the values of this archaeological site. Specifically, the province needs to raise the awareness of the public on preserving Hoa Diem archeological site; provide signposts; improve traffic facilities; build barrier around the site; associate with the schools to compile teaching materials on history; promote the introduction of the archaeological site and its remains in the media. Additionally, it is necessary to build an archaeological objects display room at Cam Ranh Museum; develop Hoa Diem archeological site into an attractive tourist sight for tourists to learn about the culture of the prehistory and protohistory in Khanh Hoa.
