The street shows of Khanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre held every weekend have become familiar to many locals and tourists in Nha Trang. The organization of traditional arts shows in public places is a way to introduce the typical arts forms of Vietnam in general and Khanh Hoa in particular to the public.

These traditional arts shows are organized in front of the provincial Conference Center at No.46 Tran Phu Street, Nha Trang, featuring many extracts of Tuồng (Vietnam’s classical drama) and Bài Chòi (Vietnam's traditional art form, recently recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity), performed by the artists and actors of Khanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre.

Watching the shows on weekends has become a habit of many people in Nha Trang. After a week of working hard, they often go to the place to see the show as well as enjoy the cool breezes from the see and chat with other people. The shows have also received a good response from some domestic tourists. “I have not seen Tuồng for a long time. Nowadays, many people do not have time to watch the whole play of Tuồng because of their busy schedule. Such performances of extracts are very suitable for tourists like me,” said Hoang Thi Thanh Thuy, a tourist from Hanoi. Some foreign tourists have also been interested in watching these traditional arts performances. Konstantin, a Russian tourist, expressed his interest in the show and the beautiful and fancy costumes of the actors. He also said that he could partly understand the content of the performance through the actors’ movements.

As reported by Tran Nhat Le, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre, in the circumstance that there have been less and less people watching Tuồng and Bài chòi, Khanh Hoa Provincial Traditional Arts Theatre launched the street shows of traditional arts in 2012 in order to bring these traditional arts forms closer to the public. This is also a means to preserve and promote the traditional arts.

Reportedly, despite the limited funds, the theatre has always tried to improve the quality of the shows. The artists and actors have incorporated more extracts of Tuồng plays and Bài chòi into the shows and practiced hard to convey more unique features of these traditional arts forms to locals and tourists.

It can be said that the organization of traditional arts show in the public places is an appropriate means to provide the locals and tourists a new choice of evening entertainment and promote the traditional culture characteristics to the public. However, it requires more appropriate policies for this activity to be maintained and developed.
