Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports recently announced the results of the province’s 10th Children’s Fine Arts Awards. This was an interesting and useful playground for the children, which was expected to develop an interest in fine arts in children.

The 10th Children’s Fine Arts Contest of Khanh Hoa was launched on October 1, 2017 and lasted until February 28, 2018. The contest received 52,155 entries of hundreds of children from the schools, provincial Children’s House and social sponsoring establishments in the province. The largest number of entries came from Nha Trang and Cam Ranh. The entrants used more diverse materials for their works compared to the previous years’ contest, from pastel, acrylic, wax crayon, paste paper to paddy grains.

Khanh Hoa organized the first fine arts contest for children in 2009. Through ten times of organization, the contest has attracted more and more attention and interest from children and parents across the province. “This is the third time I has taken part in this contest. This year, I made a painting of Uncle Ho. I have learnt more drawing skills through each contest,” said Huynh Anh Thu, pupil at Vinh Hoa 1 Primary School.

Painter Le Duy, a jury member of this contest, said, “The contest has built up and promoted a drawing movement in the schools and encouraged the children to develop an interest in fine arts. The themes of the paintings drawn by the kindergarten children are more diverse and are reflected more spontaneously than the ones of primary and junior high school children. The quality of the 10th contest is still the same as the previous ones. Besides, the constraint on the themes partly caused the children to have difficulty in showing their creativity. I think that the children should be allowed to decide the theme for their paintings.”

According to Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, in order to promote the contest as well as improve the quality of the entries, the localities, units and schools need to launch the contest to the subordinate units; enhance the role of the fine arts teachers in the school-level fine arts contests; suggest but not impose the ideas for the themes; not interfere with the children’s creativity.
