In order to create a more suitable and comfortable reading space for children and promote reading among young people, Khanh Hoa Provincial Library recently upgraded the reading rooms for children, basing on the socialized funds. The new space includes two reading rooms, an area for playing and plaster statue painting.

Reportedly, the old reading room for children of Khanh Hoa Provincial Library was built many tens of years ago and had been downgraded; therefore, it could not attract readers. In November 2017, the library started to upgrade the facility and improve the library with the total expenditure of nearly VND800 million raised from the public.

The new reading space has drawn a positive response from the children and parents. “I often go to the library to read books at weekends. I am happy that the reading rooms were upgraded. It helps me to read books more comfortably,” said Nguyen Phuong Lien, eighth grade student at Au Co Junior High School. A parent said that since the reading space has been renovated, she has often brought her child to the library to read books at the weekend instead of going to the book stores as before.

It was estimated by the provincial library that the number of young readers visiting the library since it was upgraded is more than 4,000, a twofold increased compared to before the renovation. The regulations for the library card have also been simplified to attract more readers.

Some schools and educational institutions have been associating with the library to form reading clubs and hold extracurricular activities at the library. “The cooperation between the library, schools and educational institutions is necessary to encourage the students to read books. However, the size of the reading room for children of the library is still too small to satisfy the demand of these schools and educational institutions. Therefore, we are seeking a solution to provide both regular readers and students of these units with the services as best as possible,” said Nguyen Ta, Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Library.

In the future, the library will carry out some activities to introduce the new reading rooms to more children and parents as well as to attract more young readers.
