The Yersin Museum in Nha Trang preserved many valuable documents and objects on the life and career of Dr. Alexandre Yersin. The museum needs to be more widely advertised so that more people can learn about the extraordinary contributions of the Doctor to bacteriology and science generally.

The Yersin Museum in Nha Trang preserved many valuable documents and objects on the life and career of Dr. Alexandre Yersin. The museum needs to be more widely advertised so that more people can learn about the extraordinary contributions of the Doctor to bacteriology and science generally. This will also help the museum to become a popular tourist attraction in Nha Trang.

Many valuable documents and objects

The Yersin Museum was established in 1997 as a part of the Pasteur Nha Trang Institute (No. 10 Tran Phu Street). The museum has an area of only about 200 square meters but is quite rich in exhibits which provide the visitors much information about the life and remarkable accomplishments of Yersin. For example, old Leroy watch, books and newspapers, computer, globe, astronomical telescope, and some laboratory equipments. The microscope which Yersin used to identify the bacteria that caused plague and the camera he used to take photographs during his trip to Lam Dong where he discovered Lang Biang Plateu were also well preserved in the museum.

Visiting the Yersin Museum, the visitors can also learn about the life of the Swiss-born doctor in Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa as well as his love towards this land and its people. The simple life of Yersin is partly presented with a model of his house in Xom Con (Nha Trang) where he saved the life of a lot of locals in storms and offered free medical check to the poor people. The letters he wrote to his beloved mother and sister are also maintained and displayed here.

The exhibits also show Yersin’s interest in exploration and photography. Hundreds of photographs of the old Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, and some other surrounding areas taken by the Doctor are displayed at the Yersin Museum. Some souvenirs like stamps, key chains, and postcards with the photos taken by Yersin are sold at the museum.

Reportedly, apart from the photographs which are being displayed, the Yersin Museum is preserving around other 150 photographs in which 70 ones were introduced to the public for the first time at an exhibition held in Ho Chi Minh City in March 2018.

Should be widely promoted

Many foreign tourists left their comments on the notebook provided by the museum, showing their admiration for Dr. Alexandre Yersin and his great contributions to science and medicine as well as their interest in the exhibits of the museum.

Although the Yersin Museum has many valuable documents and objects about Dr. Alexandre Yersin, it has still been popular among tourists travelling to Nha Trang. Some travel companies used to make tours discovering the life and career of Dr. Alexandre Yersin; however, these tours did not attracted tourists due to lack of promotion and tour narrators.

Dr. Alexandre Yersin lived and made extraordinary contributions to Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa in more than 50 years. There have been a lot of people in many localities over Vietnam visiting and paying their respect and admiration for the Doctor when they travelled to the city. The Yersin Museum and other relics of Yersin in Khanh Hoa should be made known to the public more widely as a way to express the gratitude to the great Doctor.
