There exist some problems in the passenger transport service in Nha Trang like taking roundabout route, overcharging, taking tourists to some specific places which offering commissions, etc. Reportedly, one of the reasons for these frauds is the pressure to achieve the sales target which is set too high for the drivers.

According to Dinh Van Cuong (Head of Nha Trang City Bureau of Culture and Information) and Ngo Thi Nhu Thuy (Khanh Hoa University), the taxi and cyclo drivers are the people who have direct contacts with tourists. The visitors to Nha Trang can get their first impression on the city from these drivers. Therefore, the behaviors of taxi and cyclo drivers probably leave positive or negative impressions on the visitors. For that reason, improving the driving behavior and etiquette and raising the awareness of the people who often contact directly with tourists, such as taxi and cyclo drivers, and vendors are a sustainable solution in order to position Nha Trang as a tourist-friendly destination.

As reported by Nguyen Sy Khanh, Vice-Chairman of Nha Trang People’s Committee, the city now has 11 taxi companies with 1,900 taxi drivers and more than 150 cyclo drivers. In order to provide tourists with better services, the city lately opened a behavioral and driving etiquette course for 600 taxi and cyclo drivers. Through the course, the taxi and cyclo drivers were trained about the behavior towards tourists and behavior in traffic, etc.

“Taking in the training course, I learned more about the regulations of the state and the city. The lecturers gave specific examples of many situations and the resolutions, which helped me to realize my mistakes in serving tourists,” said Nguyen Thanh Duoc, a cyclo driver.

Nha Trang is trying to make each taxi or cyclo driver a good representative for the city. Hopefully, these efforts of Nha Trang authorities will help the taxi and cyclo scams no longer occur in the beach city.
