The temple to Tran Duong, one of the three eminent generals of Khanh Hoa Province beside Phong and Nguyen Khanh, in Van Gia Town, Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province was inaugurated recently.

Tran Duong was born in Hien Luong Village, which is now Luong Hai residential area, Van Ninh District in 1839. In the reign of King Ham Nghi, Tran Duong together with General Trinh Phong and Nguyen Khanh and some intellectuals led the resistance war against French colonialists. Tran Duong was appointed to be the governor of the northern region of Khanh Hoa, including Ninh Hoa District and Van Ninh District. He led many successful attacks against French armies. In 1886, French armies attacked Hien Luong Village; caused a lot of damages and destruction to the village and the unarmed people there; and kept all members of Tran Duong’s family as hostages. Tran Duong sacrificed his life to save the villagers and his family.

The construction of the temple completes within approximately one year, costing around VND2 billion. The temple to Governor Tran Duong is located in the precincts of Luong Hai Pagoda and is near his grave, covering an area of around 50 square meters. The temple has two stories and eight tile roofs with paintings depicting the events relating to Tran Duong.

The temple is a meaningful place for the locals, especially the people in the Tran family, to express their eternal gratitude and respect to the great figure of Khanh Hoa in the country’s resistance war against the French colonists. From now on, the members of the Tran family can offer incense and show their reverence to their ancestor, as said by Tran Du, the G-G-G-grandchild of Tran Duong. The temple’s construction received a good response from the abbot of Luong Hai Pagoda and local people.

The temple to Tran Duong and his grave will be a religious and worshipping place for the locals and a tourist place for the people in and outside the province. Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports is in charge of the temple and will cooperate with Van Ninh District and Luong Hai Pagoda to promote the value of this monument effectively.
