The traditional handicrafts have played a viral role in helping to preserve the local unique cultural characteristics.

Numerous locals and tourists watching the fifth festival for the typical cultural villages of Khanh Hoa Province, taking place recently at the 2-4 Square (Nha Trang), were interested in the craft-making section. Although the time limit only allowed the contestants to perform some basic skills and techniques, their craftsmanship also captured the attention of the audience. The crafts made at the festival partly reflected the distinctive culture of the regions in Khanh Hoa, from mountainous region to coastal region.

The craftsmanship which was performed at the festival included skills and techniques in making seashell curtain of the fishermen from Vinh Nguyen Ward (Nha Trang) and Van Phu Commune (Van Ninh District), fishing net of the contestants from Cam Hai Dong Commune (Cam Lam District) and Cam Thuan Ward (Cam Ranh City), palm-leaf conical hat of contestants from Dien Son Commune (Dien Khanh District) and Ninh Xuan Commune (Ninh Hoa Town), papoose which is used for working in mountain fields of the craftsmen from Khanh Dong Commune (Khanh Vinh District) and Ba Cum Nam Commune (Khanh Son District).

Artisan named Ha Na from Suoi Cau village (Khanh Vinh District) was very happy to represent his commune and introduce his craftsmanship in making papoose, a typical craft of his commune, to the locals and tourists at the festival.

Apart from displaying dexterous skills and techniques in making traditional crafts, the contestants also performed many folk songs and dances. These music performances were staged to provide further understanding of the local crafts and typical culture of each region as well as highlight the typical characteristic of each handicraft. This partly helped to raise the interest of the audience for the performances.

Khanh Son District’s fruit festival and the craft contest for village patriarchs held recently also captured the attention and interest of a lot of people. The contest for village patriarchs was joined by many village patriarchs and people of ethnic communities in the area. The contest provided a chance for the contestants to show their dexterous skills in making working tools and traditional music instruments, such as papoose, flat basket, folk music instruments, and fishing tools. The fruit festival of Khanh Son District not only introduced the local fruits and farm products of high quality but also featured many traditional cultural characteristics of the Raglai, an ethnic group in the district, for example new rice celebration, performances of epics and lithophone, etc.

Integrating traditional handicrafts into cultural events and festivals is an effective means to introduce the distinctive culture of the localities and also a good way to promote the local handicrafts and introduce them to more people, especially foreign tourists, according to Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports.
