Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports on October 6 held the awarding ceremony of the 2019 provincial drawing contest for children. The 2019 edition of this contest received numerous entries from the contestants from nursery schools, primary schools and junior high schools throughout the province.
Khanh Hoa first held this drawing contest for children in 2009. Over ten years, this contest has spread across Khanh Hoa and has become more and more popular among the children in the province. From October 10, 2018 to February 28, 2019, this year’s contest received 49,551 entries comprising of 12,373 entries from Nha Trang, 10,248 ones from Cam Ranh, 7,154 ones from Ninh Hoa, 6,323 ones from Dien Khanh, 5,867 ones from Cam Lam, and 5,051 ones from Van Ninh. 540 out of 49,551 entries were given prizes. Particularly, 25 gold prizes, 35 silver prizes, 45 bronze prizes, and 75 consolation prizes were awarded to each age group.
It can be said that the annual drawing contest for children held annually at province-level helped to create a widespread drawing movement among the children from nursery to junior high schools in the province.
Many of the entries sent to this year’s edition were good in quality, and layout; clearly expressed the ideas and showed the innocence of the children. The contestants used many materials in their paintings, such as pencil, crayon, watercolor, pastel, and oil paint. Some of the entries were made with torn paper. Through the drawings, the children expressed their understanding about the world around them; expressed their love towards their family and friends; showed their hopes for good things and environment, and so on.
It could be seen that the drawings of preschool children were relatively innocent and spontaneous than the drawings of the primary and junior high school children. Their drawings were also rich in themes. However, the adults’ directive teaching partly affected the children’s self-expression and creativity.
In order to improve the quality of the contest, the children should be allowed to freely express their vision and thoughts in their pictures. This will also encourage the children’s exploration, self-expression, logical thinking, self-confidence and creativity.
As said by Le Van Hoa, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, the contest’s organization board will make some changes to the 2020 edition to improve the quality of the entries as well as to better encourage the achievements of the winners.
