In recent five years, the traditional musical instrument group of Hai Dang Song and Dance Troop has become familiar to music lovers and local people in Nha Trang City. The group has produced many music performances with traditional musical instruments bearing their own style.
At the national solo and chamber musical instrument contest organized recently by the Department of Arts Performance (under the Ministry of Culture - Sports and Tourism), the traditional musical instrument team of Hai Dang Song and Dance Troop secured the second prize with a chamber performance. This was an encouraging result of the group members’ efforts over the years.
At the end of 2014, the leadership of Hai Dang Song and Dance Troop wanted to create some music performances featuring traditional colors. They selected two instrumentalists to play monochord and 16-chord zither. Their first tradition musical instrument performances were well received by the audience. After that, the troop recruited two more instrumentalists playing bamboo flute and Vietnamese two-chord fiddle. In 2015, they formed a traditional musical instrument group including four members.
The four members of the traditional musical instrument group are Pham Van Tan, Ngo Tran Phuong Linh, Vi Van Hieu, and Nguyen Duc Hung. All of them graduated from Ho Chi Minh City Music Conservatory or Hue Academy of Music. Apart from their main instrument, each member has learned to play two or three other musical instruments. In addition to producing performances of traditional folk music, the group also makes contemporary folk music and plays modern music with traditional musical instruments.
With the love for traditional music and the encouragement of the troop’s leadership, the traditional musical instrument group members have made many efforts to bring audience good performances. The group has created a number of performances with artistic quality, which have left good impressions on the audience. They not only play solos and chamber performances of traditional musical instruments but also accompany singers. Recently, they have tried to produce their own music to serve audience. “These instrumentalists have good technique and ability to control the stage; they can also convey emotions to audience,” said screenwriter Nguyen Sy Chuc.
The traditional musical instrument group says that they need a female member playing Vietnamese hammered dulcimer in order to improve the quality of their performances and increase their creativity in producing music acts. They also wish to have more opportunities to perform so that they can improve their technique and skills.
