Bringing books to localities and schools and improving reading services are some of the activities of Khanh Hoa provincial library to promote reading among communities as well as contribute to promote the value of books.
Bringing books to grass roots places
At the end of December 2020, Khanh Hoa provincial library in collaboration with Son Trung Commune People's Committee (Khanh Son District) held the opening ceremony of Chi Chay Hamlet communal library. The library has a reading room of 60m2 housing 500 books on cultivation, animal husbandry, science, law, economics, cooking, nutrition, etc. allocated by the provincial library. People in Chi Chay Hamlet are often busy with field work all day; few people read books, according to Cao Thi Quyen, a resident in Chi Chay Hamlet. The communal library serves as a way to encourage local people to read books. “Encouraged by the commune officials, I will arrange time to go to the library to read books,” said Quyen.
As planned, the provincial library will circulate books to Chi Chay Hamlet communal library twice per year. At the opening ceremony, the provincial library offered 100 books to the communal library. Previously, the provincial library held a mobile book exhibitions at Ba Cum Nam Primary and Junior High School (Khanh Son District); gave 100 books and circulated 500 reference books, English books, comic books, books on life skills and literature, etc. to the school.
Reportedly, in 2020, the provincial library held seven mobile book exhibitions with more than 4,000 publications at the schools and localities in the province, such as Cam Lam District, Cao Ba Quat Junior High School (Nha Trang City), Ha Thanh 1 residential group, and Ha Thanh 2 residential group (Ninh Da Ward, Ninh Hoa Town). The provincial library also offered 430 books and made 40 book distribution sessions with more than 33,800 books to 88 grass roots book reading stations (including six new ones).
Improving library services
Last year, overcoming the difficulties caused by COVID-19, Khanh Hoa provincial library provided the services to 82,037 readers on-site and 150,000 readers via the internet; issued and renewed 1,976 card readers. To attract more readers, the library often held thematic books displays on anniversaries and major festivals, such as the Spring Newspaper Festival 2020. Additionally, the provincial library is regularly enriched with new books and documents. Currently, the library has a total of 374,257 books.
In addition, in 2020, the provincial library organized 29 propaganda sessions; compiled 14 thematic publications; held activities to respond to Lifelong Learning Week and Vietnam Book Day; and held Ringing Golden Bell Contest attracting more than 200 students. The library also organized the qualification round of the 2020 Reading Culture Ambassador Contest and selected 21 entries out of 1,000 entries to send to the national round. At the end of the contest, Khanh Hoa pupils achieved two third prizes and one consolation prize.
According to Nguyen Chau Hung, director of the provincial library, in 2021, in order to distribute books to readers more regularly, the library will continue to propose the project on developing the library into a digital and automated library. The library will also propose to expand the space of the library to make it a favorite destination for book lovers and strengthen the cooperation with the provincial departments and agencies in organizing activities with more diversified and richer content and formats.
