Bai Choi appeared in Khanh Hoa Province a long time ago. In order to preserve and popularize this art form more effectively, the digitization of Bai Choi is essential.
Creating more favorable conditions to popularize Bai Choi
Bai Choi was recognized by UNESCO as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Bai Choi is practiced in nine provinces and cities in Central Vietnam, including Khanh Hoa. Bai Choi in Khanh Hoa has common features and its own characteristics. However, besides practicing and preserving Bai Choi, all these nine localities haven’t digitized this art form. The era of industry 4.0 requires digitization so that the researching and promoting this art form will be more effectively. The digitization will also help to provide the public with more comprehensive and accurate information about Bai Choi.
Reportedly, nowadays, although many people know how to sing and perform Bai Choi, a few of them, who are the old generation, master Bai Choi performance skills. Therefore, it is necessary to record the performances and skills of these masters and use them as teaching aids to promote Bai Choi. This is expected to help to create a generation who is skillful in performing Bai Choi.
Expectations for database
Researching, synthesizing documents, making scientific records, and designing software to digitize Bai Choi will help to store, display, and introduce Bai Choi in libraries, museums, cultural centers, schools, etc. more conveniently. In April 2020, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee approved the project of protecting and promoting the values of Bai Choi in Khanh Hoa. The project clearly states the task of researching to improve and digitize the documents, artifacts, scripts, musical instruments, costumes, researches, artisans, and Bai Choi clubs in order to improve the quality and effectiveness in preserving and promoting the values of Bai Choi.
According to Le Van Hoa, deputy director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Culture and Sports, recently, the provincial Council of Science and Technology has agreed that the department will implement the project of applying information technology to manage the database of Bai Choi in Khanh Hoa. Accordingly, in two years, the project team will research and synthesize the theoretical and practical bases of Bai Choi performance and build the database; make scientific records of documents and collect data sources; and design management software for database of Bai Choi.
This project is expected to clarify the types of Bai Choi performances in Khanh Hoa. The project team will conduct fieldwork; make scientific records; collect documents and all things relating to Bai Choi; design management software for database and to put on the Internet with solutions to improve quality and effectiveness in preserving and promoting the values of the folk art form.
