Growing up in a poor rural area in Hai Phong City, Nguyen Van Hao enjoyed listening to guitar played by his relatives. He also spent his childhood learning music from other people, which laid the foundation for Hao to pursue music career. After graduating from the Faculty of Music Pedagogy of the National University of Arts Education in 1992, Hao became a lecturer at Nha Trang National College of Pedagogy. In the following years, Hao continued to study music theory at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, then studied for a master's degree in music theory and history at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. His inspirational lectures have encouraged many students to pursue music and achieved a certain success in their careers. In addition to teaching, Hao often takes part in music programs and pedagogical contests of Nha Trang National College of Pedagogy in the role of director or judge respectively.

Hao has conducted many scientific research projects and topics on music and composition as a lecturer at Nha Trang National College of Pedagogy. He has led three ministerial-level scientific projects, including innovating teaching methods for musical instruments and harmony using software applications, studying folk songs of Raglai ethnic group in Khanh Hoa, and designing teaching materials for music practice in preschool education. He has also been in charge of two college-level scientific projects. He is also the chief editor of junior high school music textbooks, the author of the high school music textbooks, and one of the authors of three high school books on local education about Khanh Hoa Province, and many supplementary publications.

Hao shows a passionate interest in researching folk music, particularly the music of Raglai ethnic group. His book about traditional musical instruments of Raglai people in Khanh Hoa was given a music award of Vietnam Musicians’ Association in 2012. He has also published many research papers on this topic in the Journal of Music Research of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Currently, he is furthering this research for his PhD dissertation. As said by Hao, folk music can only survive and thrive if it is connected to the modern elements. Therefore, he always tries blending modern and folk elements in his compositions.

With his contribution, Hao has received a ministerial-level title; many certificates of merit from the Ministry of Education and Training and Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee; music awards from the Vietnam Musicians’ Association; provincial arts awards, etc. In 2024, his research work "Music practice exercises for students majoring in preschool education" won the encouragement prize of Vietnam Musicians Association's Music.
