Visiting Nha Trang one day, drop in its Institute of Oceanography, you will have a chance to see “Ocean on the land”.
Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography is located on an elevated land, at 1 Cau Da St., next to Cau Da Wharf, about 6km from the centre of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province. The institute, founded in 1922, was one of the first centres for scientific research in the country. During the past 80 years, through many research programs on oceanographic processes and natural and biological conditions of the sea, serving for the sustainable exploitation and utilization of marine resources, and the protection of marine environment and security, the Institute has made significant contributions to the oceanographic research, national economic development and marine security.
Especially, the institute shelters an lively oceanographical museum which keeps and displays about 20,000 living creatures and 40,000 marine specimens collected through monitoring trips in the East Sea and some other contiguous areas. The living creatures like crabs, turtles, fish... of all kinds kept in glass tanks and lighted colourfully make the museum like a miniature ocean. The specimens, which are arranged basing on biological development and evolvement of marine species, are appreciated highly by visitors.
The museum also includes a sector for old books about sea, research devices and fishing tools.
According to Director of the Institute PhD Nguyen Tac An, an aquarium deep into Cau Da Mountain will be built in the near future to serve visitors. The institute targets to introduce biodiversity of marine , make people love the sea more and encourage them to conserve environment of ocean, added he.
