Vietnam’s tunny export in the first two months of 2010 made a increase of 150% in quantity and 170% in value  compared to the same period last year, said experts of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The U.S. was the biggest market of Vietnam’s tunny export. 3,000 tonnes of tunnies worth more than USD15 million was exported from Vietnam to the U.S. in two months. It was a year-on-year 500% increase in both quantity and value.

Tunny export to Japan, Taiwan and Canada also saw deep increase in both quantity and value.

Additionally, some new markets such as Bahamas and Libya imported a large number of tunnies despite the export price here was not very high.

Owing to the favourable weather so far this year, many provinces, including Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen had a bumper crop of tunnies. However, most fishermen seemed not to be familiar with writing fishing diary according to regulations on EU’s new IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing) law, under which, all seafood export consignments to the EU must clearly show the origin of the products, including the sea area where the fish are caught and the names of the fishing boats, or they will be refused entry.

Tunny yield in coming months is forecast to fall gradually, raising the tunny price. If, IUU law is implemented better and tunny yield is stable, export turnover of this kind of fish will rise more.
