Since early April, due to weather disturbances, especially extensive drought caused by El Niño, besides electricity generation, hydroelectric plants have provided water for agricultural practices. Therefore, Khanh Hoa Power Company has sped up the implementation of electricity saving plans.

During the first months of the year, the electricity demand has increased by over 22% over the same period last year. The power consumption rate was much higher than expected. In Khanh Hoa alone, the electricity demand in early 2010 increased by 18%. According to the electricity saving plan made by National Load Dispatch Center, Khanh Hoa Power Company has to cut down 10% of the current electricity consumption to 2.7 million kWh a day. Nguyen Kim Hoang, Vice Director of Khanh Hoa Power Company said, “Currently, 3.1 million kWh/day is consumed a day in Khanh Hoa Province.”
Khanh Hoa Power Company has sent a dispatch on the implementation of the electricity saving direction of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Ministry of Industry & Trade to the Department of Industry & Trade and Khanh Hoa power subsidiaries. Khanh Hoa Power Company has enhanced its control on additional charge, which is based on the maximum amount of electricity consumed and made charts of additional charge consumed by enterprises and businesses.
Agreement plans on 100%, 70% or 50% coverage of additional charge demand for production establishments have been made. Restaurants and hotels have been mobilized to cut down lighting for advertisement and decoration during the hard time. In addition, blackouts have been implemented to save electricity with priority being given to production businesses.
The use of solar powered water heaters and compact fluorescent lamps is recommended. Saving electricity is the duty of all people. More propaganda is required to raise public awareness of economical and effective use of electricity.
