Cam Lam District has been well-known as a mango-growing area for over many years. Crop diversification and restructuring has been suggested. Local farmers have been urged to plant new profitable variety.

New profitable variety has been widely planted.

Thuy Trieu mango are popular for their sweet delicious fruits and good yield. However, the fruits are quite small. Therefore, another variety has been suggested. A famous mango-grower named Diep The Thanh, Vice Chairperson of the Farmers’ association of Hai Tay Commune said. “I once had 3ha of Thuy Trieu mango earning VND200 million in profit a year. I have shifted to the cultivation of Hoa Loc mango. I believe that the appropriate climate in the district allows its better growth with higher profit. The garden of Trinh Thi Hoang Anh (Bai Gieng 2, Cam Duc) is also mostly covered with the new mango variety. Farmer Anh said, “Only 11 Thuy Trieu mango trees are remaining. I once had 3ha of Thuy Trieu mango which has been replaced by the new variety.”

Hundreds of millions dongs/ ha is required for the crop transfer while a loan offered to a farmer for agricultural production is only VND30 million/ha and thus many farmers cannot afford the cost. Le Van Dan, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Cam Duc Township, said, “Most of the mango-growers have been shifted to the new variety. 300ha out of 447ha has been covered with the new variety and farmers have earned higher profits.”

Ngo Van Thanh, Vice Head of Rural Agriculture & Rural Development said, “Mango cultivation is the mainstay of the agriculture in Cam Lam, where an appropriate climate allows its growth. The trademark of Cam Lam mango needs to be built up to increase its competitiveness to expand its markets.

Nguyen Thi Thanh, Deputy Chairperson of Cam Lam People’s Committee added, “Farmers have also benefited a lot from the local mango promotion programs. The district will focus investment on mango projects in 2010."
