Although Son Lam Commune, Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province, is in harsh natural and socio-economic conditions, over the past years, the image of Son Lam Commune has much improved.

Agriculture and forestry remains the mainstay in the economic structure of Son Lam, Khanh Son, Khanh Hoa.

The road leading to Son Lam has been asphalted. The image of Son Lam has much changed thanks to the hard work and great effort of the local authority and people. The resolution of the Party Congress of Son Lam Commune, term 2005 - 2010, has confirmed the local economic structure: agriculture, forestry, handicraft, trade and service. Over the past 5 years, Son Lam has seen much socio-economic growth.

Vo Viet Hung, Secretary of the Party Committee of Son Lam Commune, said, “Son Lam has transferred sucessfully crop structures.” The cultivated area is 2,796ha, including 1,453ha of annual crop, exceeding 128% of the plan, 1,343ha of industrial trees and 498ha of cereal crops or grains. Together with the expansion in cultivated areas, the commune has focused on the application of advanced technology in production with many farming programs. 48 families have joined in development of specialized orchards of durians and rambutans. Particularly, the commune has enhanced public education to urge the locals to join in the local forest cultivation effort. 404 families have planted 549ha of Acacias under the programs 132 and 743. Acacias are of high economic value, helping improve local residents’ living standard. In addition, trade and handicraft industry have also been promoted. Farming products processing and carpentry have developed well.

Moreover, the highlight of Son Lam Commune is rural traffic and basic constructions. Many transportation works, including Du Oai, an asphalted road from the provincial road 9 to Cam Khanh suspended bridge, have been built facilitating travel and trade. In 2009, a water supply system of the Ko Roa Village was put into use. 150 houses were built for the poor. The poor household rate dropped to 76/617 households accounting for 12,3% from 310/500 accounting for 62% in 2005. Vo Viet Hung said, ’"Over the past 5 years, the commune has seen great socio-economic growth with improvement in infrastructures and residents’ living standards. In the term 2010 - 2015, the commune has to keep the area of annual crop at 560ha, average growth rate of annual agricultural production value at 10% - 15%, 84ha of forest-covered land, industrial handicraft, trade and service growth rate at 20-25%."

With great effort in promoting the local economic growth, Son Lam Commune is expected to develop stronger and faster.
