Moon cake market in Nha Trang is heating up by a competition among high-class trademarks. High-class moon cakes are nutritious, less sweet and less fat to be good for health. They especially have various flavors and luxurious designs.
° Competition among high-class trademarks
More and more people choose moon cakes as presents on Mid-autumn Festival. It’s the reason that manufacturers continuously upgrade quality and designs of their moon cakes.
Kinh Do, the biggest mooncake producer, have built up many prominent kiosks of mooncakes in main streets in Nha Trang. Beside traditional baked and glutinous moon cakes and the luxurious series “Trang Vang”, this year, Kinh Do has launched a set of vegetarian moon cakes called “Trang Vang Thanh Tinh”, priced at VND520,000/4-cake box. The most expensive product of Kinh Do is “Trang Vang Hong Phuc”, costing VND720,000/box.

Huu Nghi Moon Cake this year also has dumped many high-class products into Nha Trang market. This producer has made a 70% increase in production in Khanh Hoa Province. Especially, all the products this year has a wrapper written “Product in honor of the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi” to welcome the national event.
Similarly, Bibica has launched a series of high-grade moon cakes with the shapes of the One Pillar Pagoda or the dragon on their wrappers on the occasion the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.
Dong Khanh Moon Cake this year has added sugar-free and vegetarian products to its moon cake collection.
Producers in the province also said that they will improve quality and designs of mooncakes for this Mid-autumn festival. Minh Tam, the owner of Hoa Hung Bakery in Nha Trang said, “Hoa Hung Moon Cake has the advantage of being fresh, new, delicious and no preservative. Sweet and fat contents will be reduced, saturated fat will be replaced with vegetable oil. Additionally, this year, Hoa Hung Bakery will raise production in vegetarian moon cakes with many new flavors of stuffing such as chestnut, cashew nut and almond.”
Yasaka-Saigon-Nhatrang Hotel reveals to produce 80,000 – 100,000 moon cakes this season. “The over-1-kilogram moon cake which was sold well last year will be beautified more with the smart box made by fir. This special product, costing more than VND1 million, is suitable to be a present,”, said General Director of Yasaka-Saigon-Nhatrang Hotel Dong Luong Son. In addition, Yasaka Moon Cake has products weighing 200g, 250g and 650g and selling at VND45,000 – VND209,000 each.
Another big local trademark is Sanest Moon Cake. Sanest Moon Cake products are made by high-grade and nutritious materials, especially salangane nest, shark catilage and holothurian. All of them use isomalt as a partly replacer for sugar. Sanest Moon Cake products now are sold nationwide.
° 5 - 15% increase in price
Moon cakes of all kinds this year increase between 5 - 15% in price in comparison with last year. For example, Huu Nghi Moon Cake makes a 5 – 10% increase in price, Yasaka Moon Cake: 5 – 10% up, Hoa Hung Moon Cake and Sanest Moon Cake: only 5% up. Especially, many producers give 10-20% discount on big orders.
Most producers said that the increase in price of moon cakes is because of the sharp increase in prices of materials. For instance, sugar rises from VND14,000/kilogram last year to VND20,000/kilogram this year, green peas rise from VND24,000 – VND30,000/kilogram to VND42,000 – VND50,000/kilogram and other materials for stuffing such as melon seeds, cashew nuts, jam, lotus seeds and sausage increase by 10 – 20%.
