Under the target program on poverty alleviation in 2009, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has provided 90 breeding wild pigs for locals in Khanh Thanh Commune, Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province. The project promises to bring local farmers high income.

Mang Thi Hanh, Gia Rang Village, Khanh Thanh Commune said, “I got married in 2002 and I have five children. We are struggling to make ends meet. In 2009, I was provided 3 wild pigs, piggery and mash. I am happy that the pigs are growing well.”

Under the Decision 432/QD-SNN on implementing the production and career development support project, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has provided VND190 million for 30 poor households in Khanh Thanh to create income-earning opportunities. Most of the 30 poor families agreed with the wild pig husbandry project.

Each family was offered 3 black pigs, piggery and mash. In addition, 2 courses on breeding black pigs were held to provide knowledge and technique on breeding and preventing common disease for pigs. Besides, the pig-keepers signed a contract with local veterinaries on regular examination and disease prevention. Cao Ty Nanh, Cao Gia Ngan and Mai Thanh Truyen are among those who have earned high income from the pig husbandry.

Khanh Thanh is a poor community with low intellectual level. The wild pig breeding project is expected to help many locals to get out of poverty. More consideration and support from authorities are required to help the farmers to have access to modern farming techniques.
