Support policies are required for small and medium-size enterprises to stablize production.
About 6,300 enterprises, mostly of small and medium-size, have had a great influence on the socio-economic growth of Khanh Hoa Province. Support policies for small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) has offered an opportunity for businesses to emerge from the economic downturn stronger and strengthen their position.

Do Dong Tien, Director of Quyet Tien Production and Trade Company said, “The biggest problem of SMEs is lack of capital, backward machinery and limited markets. Long Chau Private Enterprise specialized in processing seafood, is suffering from lack of capital and management capacity and thus weak competitiveness.

Francesco Russo, Chief engineering consultant of the project for SMEs, has stressed the importance of SMEs in sustainable economic development. However, SMEs meet great difficulties due to poor access to advanced technology and lack of capital.

Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee has created business opportunities with administrative reforms. Direct talks have been held between local authorities and enterprises to find out effective solutions to production and business difficulties. Through industrial promotion, enterprises have had chances to have access to updated information and advanced technology.

Under the industrial promotion program 2005-2009, start-up business courses were held for nearly 300 people. 16 short-team courses opened to raise skills in trading and management for some 900 people. Hundreds of enterprises were provided technical assistance. Job opportunities were offered to local people, especially those in rural areas. Thanks to the support polices, Quyet Tien Company has raised its production capacity to 85 tons of high quality plastic materials, creating 50 job opportunities.

The effective implementation of the support program has helped SMEs to overcome difficulties and expand production contributing greatly to the local socio-economic growth. More assistance and cooperation among authorities and relevant agencies are required to help SMEs to deal with the downturn and increase their competitiveness.
