Pham Thuc, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Ninh Ich Commune, has taken us to the house of Nguyen Dang who has a large garden of panax notoginseng. Nguyen Dang said, “We began to grow the herb over 20 years ago. Panax notoginseng can be used for treatment of blood disorders, including blood stasis, bleeding, and blood deficiency. Its root can reach 150g after a year of cultivation and even 200-300g after over 1 year. The root is VND7,000,000/kg."

Nguyen Thi Thuy, a farmer in Tan Ngoc, Ninh Ich, has earned tens of million of dongs from her panax notoginseng farm. She told us, “One day, a girl in Tan Dao, Ninh Ich came to my house to ask for the herb for her mother who suffered from a liver tumor and an enlarged abdominal cavity disease. After using the herb, the women felt well.” Rumour has it that a panax notoginseng can cure liver tumor. Therefore, panax notoginseng becomes best-selling and its price climbs to even VND1.2 million/kg.

Reportedly, notoginseng has also been believed to have anti-inflammatory and pain-killing effects in animals, strengthen the immune system, protect the liver from injury, increase blood circulation in the heart and brain while lowering elevated blood pressure, reduce cell damage after heart attack, and protect nerve and brain cells from the damage of stroke and prevent atherosclerosis and inhibit progression of atherosclerotic lesions.
