Flood has caused widespread damage to Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province. The local residents are struggling to recover from the loss and damage. The provincial road 9 has just been repaired and opened to traffic after being blocked by landslide and falling trees and pillars for several days.

 

Poor village suffers from serious damage

The bank of To Hap River from Ba Cum Bac Commune to To Hap Town is damaged in many sections. The submersible bridge between the communes of Son Binh and Son Lam is buried under sand. There is no access except wading across the breast height waters.

30 homes in Ta Gu Village, Son Hiep Commune are still cut off because the submersible bridge No.2 which was broken in the flood has not been repaired. Many roads have been blocked by falling trees. The flood has caused huge losses to purple sugarcane, corn and rice crops.

Nguyen Quoc Thinh, Vice Chairman of Khanh Son District People’s Committee said, “Hour-long downpours and a whirlwind hit the Khanh Son from October 29 to November 3 causing flooding, traffic jams and serious damage to crops and public constructions."

1 person was killed and 36.5ha of farmland was destroyed. 330ha of farm produce was ruined. Significant amounts of the grain, sugarcane and rice harvests were washed away. The damage is estimated at VND35 billion for traffic constructions, VND12 billion for irrigational works, VND6 billion for clean water systems and VND3 billion for agricultural practice.

Struggling after floods

All the residents are making headway toward recovery from flood damage.

All the residents are making headway toward recovery from flood damage. The agricultural and trading practices are returning to normal. The local residents have received aid from authorities and many organizations. The district has provided 35 tons of rice to 2,330 families.

Division Headquarters 377 has delivered 3 tons of rice to flood victims in the three communes of Son Binh, Son Lam and Thanh Son. Public constructions, including irrigational works and traffic infrastructures are under repair. The district has asked the service and trading center to buy 25 tons of rice to keep in reserve in case there is more flooding to come.

In spite of great effort, Khanh son has faced high risk of hunger due to serious damage caused by flood. Deputy Chairman Nguyen Quoc Thanh said, “Khanh Son is in need of 100 tons of rice to provide to poor families. 15 tons of rice and corn seeds are required for agricultural practices. In addition, more aid is needed to repair public infrastructures.”
