Tet (Lunar New Year Festival) is coming. Prices of most commodities are on the rise.
Food shows the sharpest increase in price. At Dam Market, price of a duck rises from VND75,000 to VND80,000 – VND90,000 and a chicken increases from VND100,000 to VND110,000. Pork also keeps high price with VND75,000/kg of lean meat.
The recent unfavorable weather has put seafood prices up deeply. Sugpo prawn soars from VND180,000 – VND230,000/kg to VND250,000 – VND270,000/kg and white shrimp rises from VND100,000 – VND120,000/kg to VND150,000/kg.

Eggs particularly decrease by VND2,000 – VND4,000/ten in price. Chicken egg is selling at VND18,000 – VND22,000/ten and duck egg at VND24,000 – VND26,000/ten.
Rice price seems unchanged while some other farm products increase. For example, wheat flour rises from VND13,000/kg to VND15,000/kg; green peas from VND35,000/kg to VND43,000/kg; yellow sesame from VND50,000/kg to VND60,000/kg.
At all markets, prices of many fruits increase by VND10,000 – VND20,000/kg over the previous month. Hoa Loc sweet mango rises from VND45,000 – VND50,000/kg to VND60,000 – VND65,000/kg, apple from VND25,000 – VND30,000/kg to VND35,000, custard apple from VND30,000 – VND35,000/kg to VND45,000/kg, blue dragon from VND20,000 to VND30,000/kg.
The rise of VND/USD exchange rate also has put up prices of imports and imported materials. Right from the first day of the year, Vinamilk raised its powder milk to VND153,000/900g can from VND138,000. Other brands such as Dutch Lady, Mead Johnson and Abbott increased by VND5,000 – VND10,000/can. Gas price also goes up continuously, selling at VND343,000/12kg tank and VND372,000/13kg tank now.
Products for Tet made sharp increases. Jam and confectionery rises 10-30%, melon seed: VND85,000/kg, sunflower seed: VND50,000/kg, pumpkin seed: VND120,000/kg, chesnut: VND240,000/kg, candied ginger and sugar coated lotus seeds: VND75,000/kg.
Beverage also shows a slight rise. At Maximark Nha Trang, coke is selling at VND160,000/box, 333 beer: VND205,000/box, Heineken beer: VND340,000/box.
Prices are forecast to keep rising from now to Tet holiday.
