Salt producing area in Khanh Hoa Province has decreased in recent years. Confronted with that situation, the provincial People’s Committee has made a planning to build clean salt areas towards a stable development for salt industry.
Salt production is a traditional industry in coastal communes of Ninh Hoa Township, Cam Ranh City and Van Ninh District. Most of the salt workers are working for Khanh Hoa Salt Joint Stock Company, Cam Ranh Salt Joint Stock Company and three other salt cooperatives. However, because salt in the province has been produced manually, its productivity is not high. Additionally, the recent decrease in salt price has caused a lot of difficulties to salt workers. In 2009 - 2010, their average income dropped to VND7.3 million/person/year from VND11million/person/year in 2005 - 2007.

According to the provincial land use planning, in the period of 2010 - 2015, the main area of salt fields will be only 751 hectares, located mainly in 5 communes (including 3 in Ninh Hoa, 1 in Cam Ranh and 1 in Van Ninh) as 264 hectares of salt fields will be changed into different use purposes.
“The aim of the province’s agriculture is decreasing the salt producing area but raising productivity as well as quality and supplying enough salt for users, fishing and processing industry”, said Dao Cong Thien, director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
From now to 2015, the province will build 2 or 3 models of clean salt production/year with 1.5-2 hectares each model with the aim to raise average productivity to 150 tons/hectare and a yield of 105,000 tons.
To reach the target, the salt industry in the province is carrying out a lot of measures such as upgrading production infrastructure, raising factory capacity and applying new technologies to production.
The authorities also are forwarding support for salt industry and laying down as a policy the expansion of clean salt area.
