A farmer named Bui Nghe in Tan Thanh Village, Cam Thanh Bac, Cam Lam, Khanh Hoa Province, has earned a high profit from breeding New Zealand white rabbits.
The rabbit raising model is very suitable for many locals bringing bumper profits due to low investment and available food sources. Bui Nghe decided to plough VND10 million savings from years of fishing in raising New Zealand rabbits.
Some locals have not succeeded in the industry due to common diseases of rabbits. His son named Bui Tien Hung said, “My father and I had to go to many places to learn experience and buy offspring in big farms in Binh Chanh, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Ninh Thuan, etc. We bought 5 New Zealand, U.S and Australia rabbits in Lam Dong.”
He finds out that raising New Zealand rabbits is more profitable. After 3 or 4 months, the number of rabbits increased to 115. A rabbit kept for meat weighs 4 - 5kg and costs VND95,000/kg. A breeding rabbit is sold at VND100,000. The rabbits have a very rapid reproductive rate with 6-7 litters a year. The average size of the litter varies but is usually between 6 and 10 babies.
Rabbits do not require great care with only two hours every morning spent on cleaning their cages to remove all droppings from the floor and feeding them. They are herbivore creatures that feed chiefly on grass, forbs and leafy weeds.
Rabbits should always have access to fresh water to prevent from coccidiosis, a common disease developed by eating and drinking contaminated food and water.
Profitable rabbit husbandry has helped to improve the living standard of the family of Bui Nghe and many other local people.
