2011 has seen a bumper crop of scallions in many parts of Khanh Hoa Province. Local scallion growers say they are harvesting a bumper crop due to almost perfect weather conditions.

Nguyen Van Thao, a farmer in Quang Hoa Village, Cam Thanh Nam Commune, Cam Ranh City happily says he has a bumper harvest this year. He has just sold scallions for VND23.5 million/ decare (1,000m2).

He has received a VND100 million deposit and the remainder will be paid when the harvest finishes. He is expected to get an average profit of VND10 million/ decare, much higher than sugar cane and wheat crops.

According to Thao, the bumper crop this year is due to favorable weather without flooding and storms. Reportedly, last year, scallion was sold at VND14 million/ decare and he broke even after much effort.

Farmer Phan Thanh Hau in Quang Hoa Village is also happy with his crop which has just been sold for VND19 million/ decare getting a profit of VND6 million/ decare.

Ngo Van Nhe, Vice Chairman of Cam Thanh Nam Commune Farmers’ Association says yields are up across the province and this year's crop is very profitable. In 2010, growers suffered from great loss due to flooding.

The bumper crop is expected to bring growers a happy and prosperous new year.
