Ship Manufacture and Research Institute of Nha Trang University, located in Hon Ro, Nha Trang, was the first place manufacturing composite ships successfully in Vietnam (1990). Now, it is well-known as a professional manufacturer of composite products, especially composite ships...
. Working with composite
“Every month, the institute’s factory with 50 workers manufactures about 30 products made of composite. Beside building ships, the factory makes many civil products such as hot water bathtubs, aquariums, frozen containers and steam pipes. Therefore, work here is very busy”, said Huynh Tan Dat, design manager of the institute.

Making composite products, the workshop is always noisy, dusty and flooded with the bad smell of composite. Most the workers wear safety working clothing. However, they work industriously and promptly.
“I’ve worked here for 6 years. Firstly, I felt uncomfortable with the smell of composite but now I am familiar with it. It’s not a problem. Many workers have worked for 15 years. They are still fine”, said a young worker, named Nguyen Duc Dung.

Most of the engineers and workers in the factory are former students of Nha Trang University. They feel happy to do what they studied and feel proud when a ship is launched.
. Continuous creation for composite products
To work out a ship with composite shell, from a design, engineers and workers have to shape a wooden frame and create its surface. The shell frame is required to be perfectly flat and smooth to ensure quality of the ship shell. Simultaneously, the shell is covered with a ground-coat paint which will become its under layer when being detached from the frame. Next, workers will cast composite product by gluing fiber layers which form the product’s thickness. After that, the composite shell will be taken from the frame and other parts and equipment will be installed for a complete ship.
“Simple products such as aquariums and bathtubs take only 1 – 2 days to finish the composite shell. But, the time for big ships may be one month or more”, revealed Ngo Khac Hai, head of composite department.
Producing civil products by composite |
Ship Manufacture and Research Institute of Nha Trang University launched the first composite ship in 1990. Up to now, the institute has produced hundreds of composite ships with many various designs and increasing demands of customers. The institute has received a lot of orders for composite products as well as composite ships from customers, not only in the province, but also in other places.
